Established in 1950, St. Clair Fire Protection District has been serving our community for over 70 years. Our department has grown to include four stations, a vast fleet of fire trucks, and highly trained Firefighter/EMT's.
● Aging Apparatus – Crews are running trucks manufactured in 1997, 1999 and 2003. Each of these trucks do not comply with NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)standards, which cause astronomically high repair costs and functional ability is unfortunately, always in question.
● Aging Tools – Crews are running hoses with some sections being as old as 1997. Certain nozzles are being held together with super glue to get them to operate properly. Auto extrication equipment is outdated, and certain tools have broken and are unrepairable. House 2’s Air Cascade System is from 1977, and parts to repair are retrofitted and aftermarket, or are becoming obsolete.
● PPE (personal protective equipment) – Some volunteer’s gear and some of the paid staff’s second set of gear are over the NFPA 10-year life span. Volunteers make up a portion of our fire protection district and are NOT paid. Even though they are not paid financially, they receive “compensation” by helping those in need and having a genuine love for the community.
● House 1 and House 2 are 43 years old and were built for a 45-year lifespan.
● House 1 and House 2 have unidentified leaks which have caused mold in areas of the firehouse that is a health hazard to employees who are there 24/7/365.
● House 1 and House 2’s roofs leak, need gutters, and have squirrels accessing the interior.
● House 2’s septic system needs to be replaced urgently.
● House 1’s Generator was manufactured in 1981 and electronic control panel parts are now obsolete.
● Total call volume continues to increase each year due to influx in the population, creating a harder workload on trucks and equipment that are already at the end or beyond their life span.
● General Obligation Bond money is NOT to be used for personnel benefit.
● Residents of the district are only taxed upon what amount is used, NOT the full total of the bond upfront, making the increase of tax gradual and easier on those affected by inflation.
● These issues create safety concerns not only to the firefighters, but to the citizens who we are coming to help.
